Introduction & Education:
Welcome to my ITD 645 blog! My name is Daleana Phillips. I am a third year PhD student in the school of communication. I am also the Assistant Director of Trio Student Support Services at Southern Miss. I have taught as an adjunct instructor in sociology since 2013 at various institutions. My research interests include immigration, crisis, communication, mass communication, and critical cultural studies. This course, ITD 645, will be the first official course that I have taken fully online. I have taken some hybrid courses in the past, but never a fully online course. Technology:
Teaching Philosophy: My teaching philosophy involves an appreciation for diversity in social demographics as well as learning styles. I try to present several ways of understanding theoretical and abstract concepts so that students learn not only the theoretical mechanics, but also their applications to current social problems in the field of sociology. I like to combine several types of teaching styles such as lecturing using Power Point or Prezi, showing videos or related media, group work, and class discussion/active participation. I try to develop a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and experimenting with new material so that students feel safe and comfortable engaging with one another. My goal is for students to be able to think critically about social problems and apply theoretical paradigms to their social world and experiences.
